Year 3 Trip to The Natural History Museum

Lessons come to life for Year 3
Our Year 3 children enjoyed a trip to the Natural History Museum where their Spring term topic was brought vividly to life.
The children had been studying ‘Rocks, Relics and Rumbles’, which involved looking at volcanoes and earthquakes, as well as investigating different types of rocks – and theories became reality at the famous London museum.
Claire Beattie, Head of Year 3 at Danetree, explained: “We looked at fossils discovered by Mary Anning, and experienced what it was like to be in an earthquake by standing in a replica of a Kobe supermarket to experience what it may have felt like during the vast 9.0 Japanese earthquake of 2011.
“We also took part in a workshop which explored how earthquakes started, using different materials.”
Other highlights of the visit on 1 March included seeing the enormous blue whale skeleton suspended from the ceiling of the entrance hall.
“The children had a wonderful day, and particularly enjoyed exhibits that were hands-on,” continued Mrs Beattie. “This meant they could unearth answers for themselves.
“Even just entering the museum was exciting, as directly ahead was a huge escalator that went through the centre of a vast Earth – travelling up this was a great way to start our day.”
She added: “Trips like these are hugely important as a way of bringing classroom learning to life, and to understand that these ideas and objects do actually exist. This visit really brought together and reinforced everything we had learnt about.
“Sometimes this is the only opportunity some children get to experience the wonders of the world, and, as a result, these school trips ensure all children can share the same experience.”
